Cono Sur Wins Title of Best Merlot and Best Chardonnay from Chile
Cono Sur 20 Barrels Limited Edition Merlot 2009 and Cono Sur 20 barrels Limited Edition Chardonnay 2009 were both chosen as the best in their category at the 8th annual Wines of Chile awards this January. Each Cono Sur wine was one of a total of 41 to win a Gold Medal and from those 41 wines; they were both selected as the top winning wine for their category. The Chardonnay was awarded the same honor at last year’s awards for the 2008 harvest.
The event was held at the Santiago Paperchase on January 13, 2011, where 620 wines from 110 wineries were tasted. This year was unique to past years as it featured an international panel of 13 judges from 10 different markets rather than the previous where Wines of Chile invited a panel from just one country.
Among the prominent U.S. judges who were present were Michael Schachner of WIne Enthusiast Magazine, Joshua Greene of Wine & Spirits Magazine and Josh Raynolds of International Wine Cellar. Wine expert Steven Spurrier and wine critic Oz Clarke from the U.K. along with Hector Vergara, Chilean Master Sommelier, also made up the panel of judges.
It was a big night for Cono Sur and an extremely proud moment that certified the winery’s position as a top producer of Chilean wine.
