An organic wine is made from organically grown grapes, meaning they were farmed and harvested without the use of man-made chemicals, whether in the form of fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides or fungicides.

In 1999, we began our organic viticulture project with 40 hectares in our Chimbarongo vineyards in the Colchagua Valley. In 2003, after the necessary three-year transition period, we produced our first wine – a Cabernet Sauvignon / Carménère – made from organically grown grapes, certified by BCS Oeko Garantie GMBH Germany. Since then, we have added more than 260 hectares of various varieties to our organic program.

Motivated by the development of eco-friendly practices, Cono Sur has produced organic wines in Chile for several years now, mainly due to the tremendous benefits that an organic culture brings to all: the environment, the consumer and the vineyards’ workers.

According to The Brundtland Report´s “Our Common Future”, sustainable development is that which “meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

In 1998, we made the decision to switch from conventional to sustainable agriculture, a system that favours the use of natural alternatives to fertilize and prevent and control pests, diseases and weeds. This is a comprehensive agricultural system that works hand-in-hand with clean and healthy environmental policies.

The idea is to avoid the use of non-natural elements as much as we can through the presence of geese, sheep, insects and plants. The environment becomes a self-regulating system, and our fruit is cultivated in a cleaner, healthier way.
