Chilean Wines Certification: How to know if a wine is sustainable?

In recent years, the concept of sustainability has gained strength with the aim of mitigating the negative impact that our activities have on the environment and communities. More and more Chilean winemakers are concerned about the environmental impact generated by the wine production process.

Sustainable production not only considers natural resources, but also is also considerate of the culture, society and economy of the region. It is also important to mention that sustainability improves the quality of the grapes and, of course, the wine.

Therefore, to get a quality product that has been made with the environment in mind, we only need to verify that the wine is sustainable. Here we will see how to verify the sustainability of what is proudly known as a true Chilean wine abroad.

How to know if a wine is sustainable?

Chilean producers that have followed eco-friendly production practices often let their consumers know that the product consumed was made in this way. To be sure, we can look at:

  • Labels: One of the keys is to look at the label of the bottle, since the most important sustainability certifications are usually included there, such as Carbon Neutral certificates, ISO 14001, ISO 50001, among others.
  • Website or platform: An organization committed to the environment always shows its concern for contributing to a better world and the steps it is taking to achieve it. Therefore, another way to know if a wine is sustainable is to check the winery’s website.
  • Sustainability Code Logo: Although it is a voluntary standard of the Chilean Wine Industry, a sustainable wine in Chile will always proudly carry the Sustainability Code on the back label.

Characteristics of a sustainable wine

Let’s start with what the Sustainability Code means in a Chilean wine. First of all, it aims to promote the sustainable production of wines with a high social, environmental and quality standard.

To be able to display this certification, companies must pass a series of audits that includes the review of the plantation areas, the areas where there are human resources, the cellar and bottling levels, and the wine tourism activities. All with the purpose of verifying that, the production is friendly to the environment, socially equitable and economically viable.

On the other hand, an eco-friendly wine producer measures the carbon footprint. This is a way of quantifying and generating an indicator of the impact that our activities have on the environment, in order to take measures that reduce the emission of CO2 or compensate the environment. Hence the Carbon Neutral certificate or ISO 50001.

Likewise, a sustainable organization correctly manages the environmental risks derived from its activities in order to protect nature. A vineyard capable of demonstrating that it is responsible and committed to protecting the environment will be ISO 14001 certified.
